West Loop Families held its third annual Chicago Education Expo at the Crowne Plaza Chicago Metro Hotel on February 27, 2016. With over 50 exhibiting schools, enrichment centers and other family resources, the day was filled with information and presentations that catered to the nearly 325 Chicago families in attendance.
The morning started when we opened the exhibit hall, where teachers, administrators and company representatives shared information about their school or business and answered questions from parents and caregivers from around the city seeking to learn more about the different options available to children in terms of education, enrichment programs and extracurricular activities.
Shortly after the exhibit hall was filled with attendees, the Conference Room doors opened to guests eager to learn about some of the alternative educational options in a Moderated Panel Discussion titled, "Finding the Best Educational Approach For Your Child." Alternative education describes a number of approaches to teaching and learning other than traditional publicly- or privately-run schools. Our panelists focused on Waldorf, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, STEAM and Classical. They participated in an excellent discussion, providing parents with a window for seeing the similarities and differences among alternatives while answering questions asked by parents seeking the method that best matches their beliefs and core valúes. The discussion was moderated by Grace Lee Sawin, Founder of Chicago School GPS, and the speakers included Alexander Phillips, Principal at Suder Montessori Magnet Elementary School; Jone Hellesoy, Director & Lead Early Childhood Teacher at City Garden Waldorf School; Phillip D. Jackson II, Executive Director at Chicago Grammar School; Amanda McQuade, Director of Admissions and Marketing at Bennett Day School; and Shalini Patel, Head of School at Inspire Girls Academy.
The presentations continued with Lorell Marin, MST, DT, Founder, Executive Director, Developmental Therapist of LEEP Forward, Inc. and Dana Hutchins, Lead Therapist at LEEP Forward, Inc., presenting "Transitions: Is This the Right School?". They spoke to guests about the transition process into a variety of schools, and also discussed what to look for when seeking the right school for children with special needs. It was an excellent small group discussion that led to many important questions asked by parents of young children.
The final presentation of the day was by Jason Weedon, CEO & Co-Founder of Gourmet Gorilla. His presentation, "Navigating Early Childhood Nutrition" was an informative one that helped parents navigate early chidhood nutrition while using whole, sustainable and organic foods that children will enjoy.
We are thrilled to continue bringing this important event to our communities and thank our Sponsors for allowing us to offer it free of charge to families throughout Chicago.
THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS!
And a big thank you to our volunteers from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School! These young volunteers worked hard before the event to help spread the word, and were filling various roles around the expo on Saturday. We couldn't have done this without you. Thank you!
